A face-on galaxy, M83 displays a barred spiral structure. At a declination of almost 30deg south, it is not well imaged from the northern hemisphere. This image was from eastern Australia. Distortions in its outer regions attest to gravitational interactions with a neighboring dwarf galaxy, NGC 5253, which spawned active star-burst activity. This galaxy has to kinematic centers, one a massive black hole and the other is problematic and obscured from our view.

The galaxy appears embedded in a faint, misty cloud that subdues many background stars, but has some patchiness in terms of lighter and darker areas.
